You Do You Counselling and Consulting practices on the stolen traditional territory of many Indigenous nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples. This land is now the home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. We acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit. The name Toronto is derived from the Mohawk word tkaronto, which means “where there are trees standing in the water.”
We feel it is important to specifically thank the Two-Spirit and Queer Indigenous people who have contributed to our learning and continue to contribute, often without acknowledgement. Two-Spirit and Queer Indigenous people - who hold beautiful, diverse identities and roles within their communities with names and descriptions in their own languages - have existed and thrived since long before colonization.
In many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities and cultures, people who experience the nuanced insights and abilities associated with both masculinity and femininity have often been celebrated for their gifts and valued as important contributors to their communities. Since colonization brought in an enforcement of unnatural binaries and attempts at erasure, many Indigenous communities have been working to re-learn and reclaim their identities and beautiful understandings of what we may call “gender and sexual orientation”. So much of what we are still working to learn and understand was already known and embraced, and we continue to value the learning we receive from Two-Spirit and Queer Indigenous members of our communities.
You Do You Counselling and Consulting recognizes that acknowledging this land is only a very small part of reconciliation, and we are committed to listening to and standing with Indigenous Peoples in the ongoing fight for truth and reconciliation of Turtle Island.
