This is a foundations level presentation that provides participants with a framework for understanding 2SLGBTQIA+ identities and terminologies, the experiences of Queer people, implications for mental health, and concrete ways everyone can be allies in their personal and professional lives. The training combines personal stories, powerful statistics, and practical takeaways to leave participants with more confidence in their work with 2SLGBTQIA+ people. Parts of the presentation including scenarios, case profiles, and prompts can be customized ahead of time to reflect relevant examples for the specific audience.
This presentation can also be offered with a focus on applications for therapeutic settings.
This 1.5 - 2 hour presentation is suitable for audiences in all fields and can be offered virtually or in person.
This presentation requires audiences to have a foundational understanding of 2SLGBTQIA+ terminology and identity*. In this session, participants will learn about laws and policies affecting 2SLGBTQIA+ people, and how they can utilize this knowledge to support empowerment and self-advocacy in clients. We will explore risk and protective factors unique to Queer communities, intersecting identities, and how to support work around common topics including “coming out,” working with families of 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, coping with gender dysphoria, and more. Learning from statistics, personal anecdotes, and case study examples, participants will reflect on their own practices, gain practical takeaways, and increase their confidence in working with 2SLGBTQIA+ people in a therapeutic setting.
The ideal audience for this 2 hour presentation is mental health clinicians who work with 2SLGBTQIA+ clients (social workers, psychologists, counsellors, etc.). It can be offered virtually or in person.
*Foundation training can be added for an additional fee, for a half day training with a short break in the middle.
